No, this can’t be happening! Jim Rothwell, 70 years old? Why that makes me…. AAAACK! 61!!!! What the hell happened? Is it global warming?

Hey, Happy Birthday, my friend! and many happy returns of the day. I have many, many happy memories of the old days in Room D, RS 202, and the shop, not to mention road trips with the Ampex 440 in the gigantic trunk of your Ford Galaxy. We made some really weird sounds, and some really great recordings, and didn’t need need any of these new-fangled digits to do it!

All the best!

Ralph

Hey, JIm,

You’re still spry and kicking a…………..! Really glad to have a good example to follow, as I follow the trail left behind you. We’re in D.C. visiting Kara, Aaron, and kids Trevor and Nathan. Back home soon. Hope you have a great b-day, and we look forward to seeing you in a few. All the best to you and the whole family–and friends who make the world go round, once more, with joy and vigah, day after day!

David

That must be 70 going on 13! Else how to explain the “boyish” jokes . . . But maybe wunderkinds aren’t on the same calendar as the rest of us. Happy Birthday, Jim! And thanks to Kriss for this very cute web site! All best wishes!

Hey Big Bro,

Thanks for paving the way into the 8th decade of a longer, fuller, more active, and – dare I say – jollier life.

Dear Mr. Rothwell,

You look familiar. I think I used to work for your son many years ago. He was a brilliant engineer, a kind mentor, a reluctant politician, and a hairless trumpet player as I recall. I learned many things studying at Smitty’s feet, such as…

1. When you drag a conference table laden with a 200lb Moog Synthesizer *towards you*, the legs are liable to collapse

2. Sound travels much faster and louder into Grant Recital Hall when you don’t shut the little wooden door next to the window while “entertaining guests” in the 200D recording booth

3. Did you know you can climb the outside of the Residence Studio to enter RS232 after hours? They don’t ever lock those windows.

4. You can seriously hurt your back if you carry the 3M 8-track machine down the RS Studio’s main staircase with only 2 people

5. Safety tip… don’t short the positive terminal of your acid-filled car battery to ground AFTER you remove the water refill caps, unless you’re wearing protective body armor and goggles.

Happy 70th Birthday, Jim. It’s mighty decent of you to check out those advanced years before I get there, passing down years of sage advice and wisdom. I never forgot anything you taught me. Except… when I clean up after the elephant, do I PUSH the broom, or PULL it? I never get that right.

Brad

P.S. I sent along a couple photos you might find amusing.

Don’t forget — I’m right behind you, so watch your step!

What do you say to a great man like Jim? uh!! Happy Birthday to you Yea, Happy Birthday to you.Hardly a day goes by that you’re not blessing someone’s life in some way. There’s simply no counting the lives you’ve touched during your 70 years. And there’s no measuring how happy so many of us feel to be celebrating you! Today I’m wishing for all the good things that should come to a great person like you.

From: Mark M. Weston, Work Study Staff, D-meritus Unum

Dear Mr. Othwell,

I enjoy reading the memories posted here. I remember laughing and learning and loving that time. We had lightning in a JAR and were so glad for it. Still are. I first encountered James R. Othwell as a salutation written on one of those 8.5″ x 5.5″ pink UMKC note pads in the Recording Studio at Grant Hall. It was followed by a limerick, The Great GEK-speak, of Kemner. We don’t have the limerick but we’ve got you and we’re grateful for you and for each other. Thanks for bringing us all together. I love our community.

Thanks to Kriss for collecting all this great audio and visual content.

Happy Birthday Mr. Othwell!

Mark

Holy Cow!! More years already? How do we keep up this pace?

Happiest of Birthdays Dr. Jim. I thank you ever and more, and always have you on my list of my influential mentors, inspirations, and cool dudes. For your interest, there are not many on that list, and many are definitely not on it.

For example, Sam Panda, Whizzo, and Rainbow Brite did not make the cut, but Max Mathews, John Chowning, and John Pierce did. I won’t belabor the “who’s hot, and who’s not” lists any further, but you’re definitely red hot on the influence-o-meter (which I believe we kept right next to the Instant Flanger, right?).

Anyway, another decade begins, and I wish you the very best in it.

Ok OK it’s February 5 – just about time for me to ‘bring up the rear’ with birthday greetings from the Philly Pholks (somehow I missed seeing this earlier, oh excuses, any will do) I’ve skimmed the site and Kriss its fabulous as usual !!! JIM thanks for having a birthday- a great reason for Kriss to put together tidbits and snipits from your amazing collage of life happenings

Does this addition automatically come to your attention — I’ll send it email just in case. (Oh me of little faith in Kriss’s technological ability, harummppp)
